America’s Loneliest Highway

Can you call it a roadside attraction if the road itself is what’s interesting?

Oats Park in Fallon, NV, was an excellent picnic lunch spot, with vintage rocket play structure

Probably not, but the boys and I had the opportunity to enjoy this desolate drive along Highway 50. Nevada is desert with a number of north/south-running mountain ranges that have squished up over the millennia. Highway 50 cuts straight across the heart of it, a long series of alternating flats and steep mountain passes. I can honestly say that we saw more bicyclists (?!) than automobiles between Ely and Fallon, Nevada. I called the boys’ attention to the first few dry lakes, but, let’s face it. If you’ve seen one perfectly flat expanse of alkali, you’ve seen them all.
